Smallpox inoculation : orders to physicians, 1792.

Contains tickets requesting that the Boston residents named on each ticket receive a smallpox inoculation. The tickets are addressed to individual physicians and are signed by a member of the Overseers of the Poor. Some of the tickets have a ward number and all of the tickets have a date between August and November 1792.

Established in 1772 by Act of the Legislature, were succeeded in 1864 by the Corporation called "Overseers of the Poor in the City of Boston," consisting of twelve residents of Boston. In 1921, the name of the Board was changed to Overseers of the Public Welfare. In 1954, the official name of the department was changed to the Welfare Department.
